Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has cast doubt over whether Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres would be a success at Arsenal, should the Gunners pursue a move for the Swedish forward.
Gyokeres, who has been in sensational form for Sporting, has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Arsenal. However, Scholes believes the 25-year-old might struggle to adapt to Mikel Arteta's system.
Scholes' Concerns Over Gyokeres' Fit at Arsenal
Speaking on a recent podcast, Scholes expressed reservations about Gyokeres' suitability for Arsenal's high-pressing, possession-based style. "He's a fantastic striker, no doubt, but Arsenal play a very specific way," Scholes said. "Gyokeres is strong and clinical, but I'm not sure he has the mobility or link-up play Arteta demands from his centre-forwards."
The former England midfielder pointed to Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as examples of the profile Arsenal typically prefers – agile forwards who can drop deep and combine with midfielders.
Gyokeres' Stellar Season in Portugal
Gyokeres has been in red-hot form for Sporting this season, netting 29 goals in all competitions. His physicality and finishing ability have made him one of Europe's most sought-after forwards.
However, Scholes argues that the Portuguese league's slower tempo might not prepare him for the intensity of the Premier League. "The Premier League is a different beast," he warned. "Defenders are quicker, the game is faster – it's a big step up."
Would Gyokeres Be a Gamble for Arsenal?
With Arsenal reportedly weighing up a move for the Swedish international, Scholes' comments raise questions about whether the Gunners should look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.
While Gyokeres' goal record is impressive, Scholes suggests Arsenal might be better served by a forward more suited to their tactical approach. "If they want to challenge for the title, they need someone who fits their system perfectly," he concluded.
