Australian football superstar Sam Kerr has openly shared her unconventional excitement for her upcoming New Year's Eve wedding to fiancée Kristie Mewis, with the Matildas captain declaring she can't wait to get 'blind drunk' with close family and friends during the celebrations.
Wedding Anticipation and Controversial Comments
The 32-year-old Chelsea striker made her surprising revelation during an appearance on the Mewis Squared podcast, where she was asked what aspect of the big day she most looked forward to - whether it was the food, venue, or outfits. Rather than focusing on traditional wedding elements, Kerr's response raised eyebrows as she enthusiastically described her vision for the evening.
'I cannot wait until we're all blind drunk, partying, New Year's Eve in our suits and just having a grand old time,' Kerr stated. 'That will be a lifetime memory with all of our friends, all dressed up.'
Past Controversies and Legal Challenges
Kerr's comments about alcohol-fuelled celebrations come with notable context, following a highly publicised incident in January 2023 that resulted in her arrest after a drunken night out with Mewis. The episode saw Kerr vomit in a taxi and smash a window, leading to a confrontation with police officer PC Stephen Lovell.
During the incident, Kerr allegedly called the officer 'stupid and white' and later showed him her bank balance to demonstrate she could afford any damages. The footballer claimed she and Mewis believed they were being kidnapped when the taxi driver took them directly to Twickenham Police station after she was sick in the vehicle.
Kerr subsequently faced trial for allegedly racially aggravated harassment of PC Lovell but was found not guilty of the charges.
Career Comeback and Leadership Return
The wedding announcement comes during a significant period in Kerr's professional career. After suffering an ACL injury in January 2024 during a Chelsea training camp in Morocco, the star striker made a successful return to the pitch in September, marking her comeback by scoring her 100th career goal for Chelsea in a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa.
In a decision that surprised many Australian football supporters, Kerr was recently handed back the Matildas captaincy ahead of their 3-0 defeat against England in Derby. Defender Steph Catley had worn the armband during Kerr's absence, and many fans believed she should have remained as skipper.
Matildas coach Joe Montemurro defended the controversial decision, telling reporters: 'I make football decisions. I'm not going to make any political decisions, and Sam is an important part of what we're trying to do. As far as we are concerned, we just kept the status quo going forward, and we are happy with her continuing on as captain.'
Kerr herself has embraced the leadership role, describing herself as a 'natural born leader' ahead of her return to the national team. 'Some people are just born natural leaders, and I put myself in that category,' she stated. 'I have so much more to give to this team in a leadership role. I feel I'm one of the best leaders.'
Having made her Matildas debut in 2009 at just 15 years old, Kerr has since become Australia's greatest ever goal-scorer, cementing her status as one of women's football's most prominent figures as she prepares for both personal and professional milestones in the coming months.
