Matildas football star Sam Kerr has confessed to a bout of pre-wedding nerves, revealing she has left a crucial element of her big day to the very last minute.
A Down-to-the-Wire Decision
The 32-year-old striker, who is set to marry her fiancée, former West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, in Perth on New Year's Eve, took to Instagram on Tuesday with a light-hearted query for her followers. She shared that she had only just been shopping for what she will wear, asking: "Leaving it late, or masterstroke getting my wedding outfit with 15 days to go?"
Her deliberate use of the word "outfit" rather than "dress" has fuelled speculation that the sports icon may forgo traditional wedding attire. This would align with her personal style, evidenced last December when she attended teammate Emily Van Egmond's wedding in a sharp ensemble of a black blazer, suit shirt, tie, and shorts.
A Whirlwind Journey to the Altar
The couple's path to the altar has been a busy one since they first got together in 2019 and publicly confirmed their relationship in 2021. They announced their engagement two years later, and in May of this year, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Jagger.
Kerr has been open about her vision for the celebration, telling fans last month: "I cannot wait until we're all blind drunk, partying, New Year's Eve in our suits and just having a grand old time." This comment further hints at a non-traditional, suit-based dress code for the festivities.
Building a Future in Perth
Amidst wedding preparations, the pair are also building their dream home. In July, they were photographed inspecting the construction of their new oceanfront property in Perth. They purchased the 200-square-metre block of land for $940,000 in August 2023. Located near Kerr's parents, the modern build is in the suburb of Kardinya, not far from her childhood home which was destroyed by a fire started by her AFL star brother Daniel in 2021.
With the median house price in the area around $1.9 million, their new home is expected to be valued significantly higher once completed.
The past year has also seen Kerr navigate significant off-pitch challenges. In February, she was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer following a trial at a London court. She has since returned to football, recovering from a knee injury as she and Mewis prepare to start married life.
