Ruben Amorim has maintained a public silence since his dismissal as Manchester United head coach in January, ending a 14-month tenure at Old Trafford. Nearly four months after his departure, the 41-year-old Portuguese manager has refrained from posting on social media or making any public statements regarding his time at the club.
Amorim's United Tenure and Exit
Amorim guided Manchester United to the Europa League final last season, but his spell was overshadowed by persistent debates surrounding his preferred 3-4-3 system, which never fully materialised. His tenure concluded after a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, where he delivered a blunt message to the board in his final post-match press conference. Tensions had been escalating in the weeks prior, largely due to his frustration over his limited involvement in the club's transfer policy. The former United boss had previously hinted at disagreements with the hierarchy regarding plans for the January transfer window.
Public Appearances in Portugal
Since returning to Portugal, Amorim has been spotted at various events but has continued to keep his silence. Here is a closer look at what the 41-year-old has been up to in recent weeks.
Qatar Open Appearance
In February, just weeks after his dismissal from United, Amorim was seen in the stands at the Qatar Open in Doha, watching Carlos Alcaraz's match against Karen Khachanov.
Playing Padel with Man City Chief
Last month, Amorim appeared relaxed and in high spirits during a visit to the Padel Expo club in Lisbon alongside Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana. The pair played together at Braga and later worked together during Amorim's time at Sporting Clube de Portugal, before he took charge at Old Trafford. The sports club posted on Instagram: "We tried to reinforce our technical staff but it wasn't possible. Thanks a lot for the visit, Ruben Amorim and Hugo Viana - it was a pleasure to have you both with us here at Padel Expo."
Football School Visit
Amorim also visited the Aguias de Camarate Football School in Lisbon, delighting young players. The club revealed on social media that the former boss was at the training centre at the end of March. A post from Aguias de Camarate read: "Last Saturday, March 28, we received a very special visit from Ruben Amorim. Our young athletes had the opportunity to share unique moments, take photographs, and experience even more closely the dream they all live every day: playing football. Moments like this will forever remain in the memory of our kids and are a huge motivation for them to continue working, learning, and believing. Thank you for the visit and the inspiration."
Return to a Familiar Home
This month, Amorim visited Clube Atletico e Cultural (CAC) in Odivelas, Lisbon, where he spent time as a youth player. He posed for photos and signed autographs, appearing in high spirits. CAC wrote on Instagram: "A good son always returns home. Today we had a different and special morning. Ruben Amorim gifted us with his presence and spent time with some of our young talents. Between photos, smiles and lots of fun, it was heard: 'Come to CAC.' Do you accept the challenge, Ruben? You will always be welcome in a home that is also yours."
Potential Return to Management
Amorim is being tipped for a return to the dugout with Sporting's fierce rivals Benfica, should the Portuguese giants decide to part ways with Jose Mourinho at the end of the season. Portuguese outlet ZeroZero claims that Amorim is a leading contender to take charge at the Estadio da Luz. Such an appointment would be highly contentious in Portugal, given the fierce rivalry between Sporting and Benfica. However, the former midfielder began his youth career with the Eagles and later returned in 2008, staying until 2017 before retiring. It has been a disappointing season for Benfica, who now have nothing left to play for. They sit seven points behind leaders FC Porto, while Sporting are third but have a game in hand on their Lisbon rivals. Brazilian side Vasco da Gama have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
