Former Manchester United captain and current television pundit Roy Keane has sent his fans on a nostalgic trip, posting a teenage throwback picture to his millions of Instagram followers.
The Throwback Snap
The image appears to be an old form of Irish identification, issued in October 1987. With Keane having been born in August 1971, the photo captures the football legend at around 16 years of age. The black and white picture shows a youthful Keane staring intently at the camera, sporting a head full of hair and wearing a woolly jumper.
In a light-hearted caption accompanying the post, which was shared with his 2.4 million Instagram followers, the Irishman reflected on his modest beginnings, writing: 'I didn’t have much, just a dream, great hair and a point to prove.'
From Cork to the Premier League
At the time the photo was taken, a 16-year-old Keane was honing his skills with Rockmount in County Cork. His incredible journey to becoming one of football's most formidable midfielders began in earnest after a brief stint with Cobh Ramblers in his native Ireland.
In 1990, his talent was recognised, and he made the move to England, joining Nottingham Forest for a fee of £47,000. He went on to make 148 appearances for the club before a monumental transfer unfolded.
After nearly signing for Blackburn, Manchester United swooped in to secure his signature for a British record fee of £3.75 million. It was at Old Trafford where Roy Keane truly cemented his legacy.
A Legendary Career and New Role
Between 1993 and 2005, under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, Keane became the heart of Manchester United, making 479 appearances. His trophy cabinet is a testament to his success, boasting seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and a Champions League victory.
After leaving United, he had a short spell with Celtic before retiring. Today, Keane is a hugely popular and straight-talking pundit for Sky Sports, known for his uncompromising analysis and forthright opinions.
