Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has been handed a stinging critique from pundit Jamie Redknapp, who insists the Swede has fallen short of expectations since his summer move, despite scoring the winner against Everton.
Redknapp's Scathing Assessment
Former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp did not hold back in his analysis of Viktor Gyokeres's performance in Arsenal's 1-0 victory away at Everton. While the forward netted the decisive goal from the penalty spot, Redknapp was left thoroughly unconvinced by his overall contribution.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp stated the striker is "finding it hard" and struggling to adapt to the demands of the English top flight. "For whatever reason, and it shouldn’t be the case because he’s been in the English leagues before, it looks like he’s really struggling with the physicality of it," Redknapp said.
A Struggle for Physical Dominance
Redknapp's most pointed criticism centred on Gyokeres's inability to impose himself physically, a surprising shortcoming given the player's stature. "Considering he’s a very big guy, I very rarely see him win a duel one on one," he noted.
The pundit also found fault with the forward's technical game, adding: "In terms of his finesse, his touch, bringing people into play – not good enough." Redknapp conceded the Sweden international is a different type of player, describing him as a "battering ram who is going to score goals," but argued that winning a game with a penalty was not the statement needed.
Gyokeres Responds with Focus on the Win
For his part, Viktor Gyokeres appeared unbothered by the method of his goal, which was his fifth in the Premier League this season and his first since November 1. After assuming penalty duties from Bukayo Saka, he emphasised the importance of the result.
"It's a few that can take it and this time it was me that took it. It was important to score that one," Gyokeres said post-match. "The most important is we won the game." He also acknowledged an ongoing period of adaptation, stating he is trying to "get to know the system and how we play."
The debate highlights the intense scrutiny on Arsenal's big-money signings. While the three points at Goodison Park were crucial, questions about Gyokeres's overall impact and suitability for Mikel Arteta's side, fuelled by assessments like Redknapp's, are unlikely to fade without a consistent run of dominant performances.
