Lens Stand Firm Against PSG's Fixture Rescheduling Request
Paris Saint-Germain have faced sharp criticism over their plans to rearrange a domestic fixture ahead of their highly anticipated Champions League quarter-final clash with Liverpool. Lens, their Ligue 1 opponents, have released a robust statement firmly opposing any postponement of the match currently scheduled for April 11.
Champions League Quarter-Final Schedule Intensifies Fixture Pressure
The first leg between Liverpool and PSG is set for April 8 at the Parc des Princes, with the return leg at Anfield following on April 14. The victor of this tie will advance to the semi-finals, adding significant stakes to the encounter. This schedule places the Lens fixture squarely between both European legs, creating a congested period for PSG.
Liverpool secured their quarter-final berth with a commanding 4-1 aggregate victory over Galatasaray, setting up a rematch against the French giants who eliminated them at the last-16 stage last season. Meanwhile, Liverpool are scheduled to face Fulham in the Premier League on the same day PSG are due to play Lens.
Lens' Statement Highlights Broader Concerns Over French Football
In their statement, Lens expressed a firm commitment to sporting stability and equity. "On March 6, the scheduling of the match pitting Racing Club de Lens against Paris Saint-Germain was finalised, formalising a framework to which everyone was then invited to adhere," the club stated.
The club emphasised that changing the match date would force them into a punishing schedule of matches every three days, a rhythm not aligned with the resources of a club with the tenth-largest budget in the championship. "It would therefore be understood that the tenth budget in the championship should adapt to the demands of the most powerful," Lens argued, highlighting a perceived imbalance.
Beyond the immediate fixture, Lens raised fundamental questions about the respect due to domestic competitions. "For it is permissible to wonder when, on its own soil, the championship sometimes seems relegated behind other ambitions, however legitimate they may be," the statement continued, pointing to recent changes like the reduction of Ligue 1 to 18 clubs and the discontinuation of the Coupe de la Ligue.
PSG's Previous Requests and the Current Dispute
Recent reports indicate that PSG formally requested the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to postpone and reschedule the Lens match. This follows a similar plea earlier in the season regarding their Ligue 1 match against Nantes, which was initially set between both legs of their Champions League last-16 tie against Chelsea.
Lens noted that they had privately communicated their opposition to PSG from the outset but felt compelled to break their silence due to the "proliferation of statements, interventions, and various suggestions." The club warned against a "troubling sentiment" where the French championship becomes "an adjustment variable at the whim of the European imperatives of some."
Racing Club de Lens remains committed to equity, the clarity of rules, and respect for all stakeholders. Simple principles, for a loyal and respected French football, the statement concluded, underscoring their stance in this escalating dispute.
