The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings as Storm Dave is set to batter the UK with winds of up to 80mph and heavy snow over the Easter bank holiday weekend. The storm, which continues to deepen, poses significant risks to life and property, particularly in northern regions.
Amber and Yellow Warnings in Force
An amber wind warning, indicating a 'danger to life', is active for northern England, southern Scotland, and northwest Wales until 3am on Sunday. Gusts of 70mph are expected in these areas, with widespread winds of 50-60mph across all warning zones. Exposed locations could see gusts reaching 60-70mph, leading to likely travel disruption and possible power cuts.
Blizzard Conditions Forecast
Heavy snow will accompany the strong winds in northern Scotland, where the Met Office forecasts 'blizzard conditions'. A snow warning is in place for Grampian and Highlands & Eilean Siar, with accumulations of 5-10cm possible in areas over 200m in elevation until 3am on Sunday.
Chris Bulmer, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: 'Storm Dave will bring a period of very strong winds, with the strongest gusts most likely in the Amber warning area. People should be prepared for impacts with disruption to travel likely and possible power cuts. Wind speeds will peak at different times as the deep area of low pressure moves across the north of the UK.'
Widespread Wind Alerts
A yellow wind warning covers North East England, North West England, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, and Yorkshire & Humber until 7am on Sunday. In these regions, winds of 50-60mph are forecast, with gusts of 60-70mph in some locations.
Additionally, the rest of Scotland is under a wind warning from 6pm on Saturday until midday on Sunday, where exposed areas could experience winds of 80-90mph. Northern Ireland also faces a wind warning until 3am on Sunday, with gusts of 50-60mph expected widely.
Easter Sunday and Beyond
Storm Dave is expected to clear away to the northeast by Sunday morning, leaving sunshine and showers across the UK for Easter Sunday. However, showers will be particularly heavy and blustery in the north.
The outlook for Monday to Wednesday suggests a frosty start to Easter Monday, followed by mostly fine conditions. Breezy weather will persist in the west, with rain arriving in the north and west thereafter. Meanwhile, warm sunshine is forecast to develop further south and east, offering some respite after the stormy weekend.
Temperatures on Sunday will remain in the low single figures for parts of the UK, adding to the chill from the strong winds and snow. Residents are urged to stay updated with Met Office advisories and take necessary precautions during this severe weather event.
