Preston Striker Banned for Nine Matches

Preston North End have declared themselves extremely disappointed after the Football Association handed a nine-match suspension to their forward, Milutin Osmajic. The ban follows an independent regulatory commission finding that allegations of racist abuse made by Burnley's Hannibal Mejbri were proven.

The Incident and Club Reaction

The alleged incident occurred during a Sky Bet Championship derby between the two Lancashire clubs at Deepdale on Saturday 15 February 2025. The match ultimately finished as a 0-0 draw.

In an official club statement, Preston North End noted their continued support for the player, who has always maintained his innocence. The club highlighted that the decision was reached on the balance of probabilities standard of proof, rather than the stricter beyond reasonable doubt.

The statement also pointed out that the FA determined the decision offers no moral judgement on Osmajic's general character and that the comment was not premeditated. Despite the ruling, the club reaffirmed its pride in its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policies and its opposition to all forms of discrimination.

Sanctions and FA Statement

In addition to the immediate nine-match ban, the 26-year-old Montenegrin international has been fined £21,000 and must attend a mandatory education course.

The Football Association stated that an independent regulatory commission found Osmajic had committed an aggravated breach of FA Rule E3. The charge alleged he used abusive and/or insulting words that included a reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race towards the Burnley player.

The FA confirmed that Osmajic denied the charge, but it was subsequently found proven by the commission. The written reasons for the decision are expected to be published at a later date.

Osmajic, who was signed by Preston from Spanish side Cadiz in September 2023, has scored four goals in 11 league appearances for the club this season.
