Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has openly declared that securing Premier League survival remains his team's absolute priority, despite their ongoing Europa League campaign. This admission came following Forest's 1-1 draw against Porto in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash at the Estadio do Dragao.
Radical Team Selection Highlights Domestic Focus
Pereira's commitment to the Premier League cause was starkly illustrated by his team selection in Portugal. The Forest boss made a staggering nine changes to his starting lineup for the European fixture, a clear signal that his focus was divided. The rotated side managed to escape with a valuable draw, largely thanks to a highly unusual own goal from Porto's Martim Fernandes, who inadvertently directed a 25-yard back-pass into his own net.
Ortega's Heroics Keep European Dream Alive
The visitors had fallen behind early to a strike from William Gomes and were forced to rely on a series of excellent saves from goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to keep the tie finely balanced. The result means everything will be decided in the second leg at Nottingham's City Ground next week. However, Pereira was unequivocal about where his immediate concerns lie.
"In three days we play against Aston Villa, we are already thinking about that match," Pereira stated. "If we were certain in the Premier League we would be talking about another match. We are playing to stay in the Premier League... That has to be taken very seriously."
The Gruelling Schedule Dilemma
The Portuguese coach highlighted the punishing schedule facing his squad as a key factor in his decision-making. "In England, we have to play at 2pm, we don't have 72 hours to recover, that is the minimum we could ask for," he explained, referring to the upcoming Sunday fixture against Aston Villa. "The first substitutions we made were already thinking about the match on Sunday."
Balancing Ambition with Responsibility
While acknowledging the club's historic opportunity to reach a first European semi-final since 1984, Pereira stressed the need for pragmatism. "We have ambitions in the Europa League, but we have to be responsible and we need to add points as soon as possible to remain in the Premier League," he said, referencing the tight survival battle involving Forest, West Ham, Leeds, and Tottenham.
He described the draw in Porto as a "better result than the exhibition clearly," but added it was "no surprise" given the circumstances. The manager's approach to the crucial second leg against Porto will be directly influenced by the outcome of the Villa match.
Second Leg Strategy Hinges on Villa Result
"If we win the match against Aston Villa it will be one scenario and I hope we can win and compete with a big team who won 3-1 tonight," Pereira added, alluding to Porto's domestic form. "In two and a half days we will be playing and after that we will see what we have to do."
This puts Nottingham Forest in a complex position, holding their European destiny in their own hands for the return leg, yet compelled to prioritise Premier League points this weekend. Pereira's candid comments reveal the intense pressure and strategic juggling act facing clubs battling on multiple fronts while embroiled in a relegation dogfight.
