Snooker Stars Risk Financial Penalties for Media Day Absence
Snooker icons Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump are both facing potential fines after failing to attend the official media launch day for the 2026 World Snooker Championship. The prestigious tournament commences at Sheffield's historic Crucible Theatre on Saturday afternoon, where both players will be competing for the coveted title.
Mandatory Event Ignored by Top Players
The media launch event took place outside the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Friday, providing the top sixteen ranked players with an opportunity to engage with supporters and address the assembled press corps. While fourteen players fulfilled their obligations, both O'Sullivan and Trump were conspicuously absent from the proceedings.
World Snooker Championship regulations require all participating players to attend the media launch day, and organizers are now considering financial penalties for the two absentees unless they can provide valid medical documentation to justify their non-attendance.
Previous Precedents and Player Movements
This is not the first instance of players being penalized for missing the championship's media obligations. Former world champion Neil Robertson was fined £250 three years ago when traffic problems prevented his attendance at the equivalent event.
O'Sullivan recently disclosed that he planned to travel to the tournament from Ireland, while Trump had been training in Thailand before returning to the United Kingdom. Trump's relocation from his Dubai training base was necessitated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East region.
Championship Context and Venue Security
The 2026 championship holds particular significance for both players. Seven-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan will be attempting to secure an unprecedented eighth world title when he faces He Guoqiang in his opening round match. World number one Judd Trump will begin his campaign against Gary Wilson in the tournament's first round.
Defending champion Zhao Xintong enters the competition following his victory over Mark Williams in last year's final, where he also defeated O'Sullivan in the semi-finals. Zhao will face Liam Highfield in his opening match in Sheffield.
The venue for the World Snooker Championship has been secured for the foreseeable future, with the Crucible Theatre confirmed to host the tournament until at least 2045, with potential extensions through to 2050. Additionally, an agreement has been reached that will see the championship temporarily relocated to an alternative venue following the 2028 edition while refurbishment works are completed at the Crucible.
