The Met Office has forecast heavy rain for Wales this weekend, with downpours expected from Saturday afternoon and intensifying on Sunday. Most of the UK will see precipitation, with Scotland experiencing the earliest rainfall early on Saturday.
Saturday's forecast
North Wales is expected to see rain by early Saturday afternoon, moving southwards to mid-Wales by late afternoon. While much of Wales will remain dry for the rest of Saturday, heavy rain will return in the early hours of Sunday. By mid-morning Sunday, Swansea and Cardiff will have experienced downpours.
Sunday's forecast
Rain will worsen in the early afternoon on Sunday, with most of Wales under rainclouds. Scattered showers will persist for the rest of the weekend. The Met Office forecast, issued on Thursday (July 23), said: "Plenty of very warm sunshine on Friday, though some rain in the far northwest. Turning cooler over the weekend with some rain moving southeast across the UK. Breezy at times."
UK-wide impact
Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and most of England are expected to see heavy rainfall. Eight regions of the UK will face downpours, while London and the south east should get scattered showers. Rain will move southeast from Northern Ireland and Scotland at 7am on Saturday. By 10am, northern England will see rain, and by early afternoon, northwest England and north Wales will feel damp, followed by Yorkshire later.
England and Wales will largely have a dry Saturday night, but Northern Ireland and Scotland will see precipitation with a new band of rain, which will move quickly in the early hours of Sunday. At 7am Sunday, swathes of Wales, northwest England, Yorkshire, and the Midlands will wake to rain. The same areas will still be wet as rain hits the southwest at 10am.
The rain will be at its worst around 1pm on Sunday, when most of the country is covered with clouds. Temperatures will remain relatively cool for the season, with highs of 22°C on both Saturday and Sunday.
