Nagelsmann's Stern Message to Returning Winger
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has delivered a blunt message to Leroy Sane, warning the winger that his chances to secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup squad are rapidly diminishing. This comes as Sane receives his first national team call-up since his surprising summer transfer to Turkish champions Galatasaray.
Nagelsmann admitted he wants to assess the 29-year-old personally, but emphasised that a place on the plane is far from guaranteed for the 70-cap international. The manager stated he has been openly transparent with Sane about the situation.
The Clock is Ticking for Sane
'Leroy knows what's required,' Nagelsmann declared. 'He knows that there aren't countless more opportunities for him to prove himself under my leadership in the national team, he knows that. I can say that so openly because I told him so openly.'
The manager pointed to Sane's specific player profile as a reason for his current inclusion, noting that the position isn't overloaded with six or seven alternatives. However, he was clear that potential alone is no longer enough. 'He's a player who can do everything, he just has to deliver. Nobody can help him with that, only he can do it himself.'
While acknowledging Sane's improved scoring rate in both the Super Lig and the Champions League compared to the start of the season, Nagelsmann insisted there is still room for growth. 'He still has steps to take to improve even further – both here and at the club,' he added.
A Career at a Crossroads
Sane's recall comes after a period of significant change in his career. After scoring 13 goals in 45 matches for Bayern Munich last season, the German champions were reportedly keen to extend his contract. However, Sane rejected their terms and opted for a shock £12million move to Galatasaray, despite interest from other clubs.
His start in Turkey has been slower than anticipated. He has scored three goals in 15 appearances and has found himself on the bench on several occasions, including as an unused substitute in the memorable Champions League victory over Liverpool.
This international break presents a critical opportunity. Germany can officially secure their place at the summer tournament in matches against Luxembourg and Slovakia. For Sane, who previously played under Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich, these fixtures are more than just qualifiers; they are his audition for a World Cup spot.
The winger's career has seen high-profile moves from Schalke to Manchester City for £54million, before a transfer to Bayern Munich in 2020 which allowed City to recoup their initial investment. He netted 61 goals in 220 matches for the Bavarian giants.
