French football superstar Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of the national team's upcoming World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, dealing a blow to Les Bleus just as he celebrates a monumental personal achievement.
Injury Strikes After Historic Night
The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Friday that the Real Madrid forward will not travel with the squad for Sunday's Group D match. The decision comes after Mbappe was diagnosed with inflammation in his right ankle.
The injury news casts a shadow over what was a triumphant night for the player and his country. Just on Thursday, during France's 4-0 victory over Ukraine in Paris, Mbappe scored his 399th and 400th senior career goals, officially booking France's place at next year's World Cup finals.
Dominant France Secure Qualification
The match against Ukraine saw a dominant second-half performance from the two-time world champions after a goalless first 45 minutes. Alongside Mbappe's historic brace, Michael Olise and Hugo Ekitike also found the net in a convincing win that sealed their tournament berth.
For Sunday's now-meaningless qualifier, France manager Didier Deschamps will also be without the services of AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné, who is suspended after receiving a booking against Ukraine. Furthermore, Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga is sidelined with muscle tension in his left hamstring, as confirmed by the FFF.
Real Madrid Concerns Loom Large
All eyes will now be on the medical tests Mbappe is set to undergo later today in the Spanish capital. The timing is far from ideal for his club, Real Madrid. Mbappe has been in scintillating form this season
His potential absence would be a significant setback for manager Xabi Alonso's side. Los Blancos are currently enjoying a three-point lead over rivals Barcelona in La Liga, having lost only one of their opening 12 league fixtures.
The club faces a crucial period, returning to action on 23 November with a trip to Elche, followed by a key Champions League encounter against Manchester City next month. Madrid will be desperately hoping their star man has avoided a serious injury that could disrupt their campaign.
