Manchester United are set to undertake significant summer renovation works at their iconic Old Trafford stadium, with a primary focus on finally resolving the long-standing and embarrassing issue of leaks from the roof.
Summer Works Target Persistent Problems
According to information obtained by Daily Mail Sport, the Premier League giants have planned a programme of improvements. A key priority is addressing the problematic drainage system, which has led to water cascading onto fans during matches in recent seasons.
The club will modernise the so-called siphonic drainage system, designed to prevent gutters from clogging and water from pooling on the roof. Viral videos showing downpours inside the stadium have drawn criticism towards the Glazer family's ownership, highlighting a perceived lack of investment in facilities.
One notable incident occurred a year ago, when the roof began leaking during Ruben Amorim's press conference following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
Compliance and Future Ambitions
Alongside the drainage overhaul, the club will also upgrade the player and technical area benches at the 'Theatre of Dreams' to ensure they comply with new UEFA regulations.
While these essential maintenance works are planned, the club's long-term vision remains a move to a brand-new stadium. United revealed plans in March for a new 100,000-seat venue, ambitiously dubbed a 'Wembley of the North'.
The proposed design envisions a stadium under a vast 'umbrella' structure, accompanied by a public square twice the size of Trafalgar Square and its own version of Wembley Way, forming part of an impressive 'future city' concept.
Balancing Present and Future
Club executives are keen to ensure the current historic ground is maintained in good condition while future plans develop. Daily Mail Sport previously reported that constructing a new stadium could take approximately five years, though a comprehensive refurbishment of Old Trafford has not been ruled out.
Further planned enhancements for the coming period include a major renovation of the Old Trafford pitch. This dual approach underscores the club's commitment to both immediate improvements and its monumental future ambitions.
