Man Utd Opt for Interim Manager Until Summer After Amorim Sacking
Man Utd Plan Interim Manager Before Summer Appointment

Manchester United have decided to install an interim manager to see out the current campaign, following their decision to dismiss head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday. The club will then target a permanent appointment in the summer of 2026.

Fletcher Takes Temporary Reign

Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge, starting with Wednesday's Premier League fixture away at Burnley. The former United midfielder is also expected to lead the team for their FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion this Sunday.

This move provides the Old Trafford hierarchy with valuable breathing space. It allows them to conduct a thorough search for a long-term successor to Amorim, who was relieved of his duties after a turbulent spell.

Echoes of the Rangnick Strategy

The proposed plan mirrors the strategy United employed during the 2021-22 season. After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure, Ralf Rangnick was brought in as an interim manager for the final five months before Erik ten Hag's permanent arrival the following summer.

This approach would mean United are seeking their seventh permanent manager since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired, excluding caretaker and interim roles. The extended timeframe allows the club to assess a wider pool of candidates who may become available at the season's end.

Potential Candidates and Internal Options

While Fletcher has the first opportunity to impress, other former United figures could be considered for the interim role. Michael Carrick, who had a three-game caretaker stint in 2021, now has extensive experience managing Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Similarly, Ruud van Nistelrooy went unbeaten in four matches as interim boss after Ten Hag's dismissal last year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who transformed a caretaker role into a permanent job, is also available after leaving Turkish side Besiktas in August 2025.

Looking ahead to the summer, United's search for a permanent boss could coincide with major international tournaments. Managers such as Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino may become free agents after the 2026 World Cup, while Oliver Glasner's contract with Crystal Palace is set to expire at the end of the season.

The coming months at Old Trafford promise to be a period of significant transition, with a short-term solution paving the way for a crucial long-term appointment.
