Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the caretaker manager of Manchester United, is unable to move into his own £4 million mansion in Cheshire because it is currently rented by Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. The Norwegian has been living in the Lowry Hotel, a situation reminiscent of his predecessor Jose Mourinho, but unlike Mourinho, Solskjaer's hotel stay was not by choice.
Solskjaer purchased the five-bedroom property during his playing days at Manchester United and put it up for sale a couple of years ago. When it failed to attract buyers, it was offered for rent. Van Dijk snapped it up temporarily when he moved to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018.
A source told the Sun: "The property is the one Ole and his family lived in since his time at United and when he moved away it was eventually put up for sale. But when no takers came it was offered for rent – and when van Dijk signed for Liverpool he came to see it and loved it."
Solskjaer spent nine weeks in the Lowry before moving out last month, while Mourinho stayed there for 127 weeks, spending £800,000. Mourinho had previously defended his choice of accommodation, saying he felt at home in the hotel and had all the comfort he needed.
