Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been unable to move into his own £4 million Cheshire mansion because it is currently rented to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. The Manchester United caretaker manager has been living in a hotel since his return to the club in December.
Solskjaer bought the five-bedroom property during his playing days at United and put it up for sale a couple of years ago. When it failed to sell, it was offered for rent, and van Dijk snapped it up after his move from Southampton to Liverpool in January 2018.
A source told The Sun: “The property is the one Ole and his family lived in since his time at United and when he moved away it was eventually put up for sale. But when no takers came it was offered for rent – and when van Dijk signed for Liverpool he came to see it and loved it.”
Solskjaer spent nine weeks at the Lowry Hotel before moving out last month. In contrast, his predecessor Jose Mourinho stayed at the same hotel for 127 weeks, spending £800,000 during his tenure. Mourinho had previously defended his hotel living, saying he felt comfortable there.
