Manchester United are edging closer to fulfilling Bruno Fernandes' primary condition for signing a new contract, as the club's resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick continues. The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed a stellar season, but uncertainties surrounding his future at Old Trafford persist ahead of a pivotal summer transfer window.
Fernandes' Impressive Season
The Manchester United captain has netted eight goals and provided 19 assists in 31 Premier League appearances this season, placing him just two assists shy of breaking the league record jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. His current contract runs until June 2027, with the club holding an option to extend by an additional 12 months.
Despite rejecting a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, Fernandes' future remains under scrutiny due to a €65 million (£56.3 million) release clause in his contract, which can be activated until mid-July, as reported by The Telegraph.
Club's Turnaround Under Carrick
United sit third in the Premier League following a 2-1 victory over Brentford on Monday, marking their ninth win in 13 matches under Carrick's stewardship. Securing Champions League football for next season is crucial for the club—and for retaining Fernandes.
According to Mirror Football's exclusive report last month, the two key factors determining Fernandes' future are Champions League qualification and Carrick's permanent appointment as manager. United's hierarchy is waiting until the season's end to decide whether the former midfielder will replace Ruben Amorim on a full-time basis, though Carrick is currently the frontrunner.
Fernandes' Ambition and Contract Talks
Fernandes remains highly ambitious and, while he will not interfere with the club's transfer activities, he seeks assurance that the team is progressing positively. United officials are prepared to offer him a new deal worth £400,000 per week, while also targeting Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson or Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni as a high-profile replacement for Casemiro.
Speaking on Wayne Rooney's podcast last week, Fernandes explained his decision to reject a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia: "I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club. Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money... there was a lot. The good thing I have in my family is that my wife is pretty down to earth like me. We're very aware that we don't want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids and trying to be as successful as possible."
He added: "The words of my wife were like, 'have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?' And that small thing she said made me understand that she's on the same page as me. Let's keep trying and see where this takes me."
United's Hopes Rest on Champions League and Carrick
United are desperate to retain their influential skipper, who has amassed 106 goals and 106 assists in 323 appearances for the club. The allure of Champions League football, potentially under Carrick's permanent leadership, could be the deciding factor in convincing Fernandes to commit his long-term future to Old Trafford.
