Manchester United have reached an agreement to extend the loan of promising young defender Harry Amass at Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season. The decision comes after Old Trafford bosses were left delighted with his development during his initial spell with the Championship club.
Impressive Start in Senior Football
Amass, who is just 18 years old, joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan in September and has since become a mainstay in their side. The left-back has enjoyed an accomplished loan spell in Yorkshire, demonstrating remarkable consistency despite the Owls' off-field troubles, which include heading into administration.
His growing influence was highlighted at the weekend when he scored his first senior goal against Southampton. Since arriving at Hillsborough, the England under-19 international has not missed a single Championship game and has completed the full 90 minutes in the last ten consecutive matches.
Rapid Progression at Hillsborough
According to reports from the BBC, United's satisfaction with Amass's progress has directly led to the choice to prolong his stay. Sheffield Wednesday also believe the teenager has progressed significantly during his first few months with the club.
Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has been effusive in his praise for the loanee. Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Pedersen stated that Amass has shown he can compete with the best the Championship has to offer.
"The young man who came into Sheffield Wednesday and the young man who just left the stadium today are two different humans," Pedersen said. "And they are two different players. His progression has been amazing."
A Bright Future for the United Prospect
Pedersen further elaborated on the specific areas where Amass has improved, noting his physical development and mental maturity. "He runs more, he has started to sprint more, he has more accelerations," the manager observed. "I see a young guy who has started to be physically stronger... He loves to learn. We love to have him here."
Manchester United originally signed Amass from Watford in August 2023. His successful adaptation to the rigours of senior football in the Championship marks a significant step in his career, justifying the club's decision to double down on his loan experience for the remainder of the campaign.
