Manchester United Edge Closer to Securing Key Duo with New Contracts
Manchester United are on the brink of finalising new agreements for defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, two pivotal figures who have flourished under the management of Michael Carrick. Both players, recently recalled to the England national team, have become central to United's resurgence, with negotiations advancing to retain their services at Old Trafford.
Contract Details and Squad Stability
The club is actively engaged in discussions to secure Maguire and Mainoo, whose careers have been revitalised since Carrick took charge. Maguire, whose current deal was set to expire this summer risking a free transfer, is now likely to sign a one-year contract with an option for an additional season. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Mainoo, previously under contract only until next summer, is expected to commit to a long-term agreement extending until 2031, underscoring his importance to United's future plans.
Revival Under Carrick's Leadership
Both Maguire and Mainoo have been ever-present starters in Carrick's lineup, featuring in each of the nine matches leading up to the recent trip to Bournemouth. This marks a significant turnaround for Mainoo, who had not started a single Premier League game this season under former manager Ruben Amorim and had considered loan moves last summer and in January. His fortunes changed dramatically following Amorim's dismissal, with Carrick integrating him into the first team.
Similarly, Maguire, the former captain who joined United from Leicester in 2019 for £80 million, had only begun four top-flight matches this season before Carrick rushed him back from injury for his debut game in charge—a 2-0 victory over Manchester City. Despite losing the captaincy under previous manager Erik ten Hag, the 33-year-old has fought to reestablish himself as a key player, amassing 265 appearances for the club.
Implications for Summer Transfers and England Recognition
Securing Mainoo's future will streamline United's summer business, as the club is still anticipated to target at least one, and likely two, midfielders following Casemiro's announcement that he will depart upon contract expiration. Additionally, both Maguire and Mainoo earned recalls to the England squad on Friday under manager Thomas Tuchel, marking their first inclusion since September 2024, a testament to their improved form and consistency at club level.
This development highlights Carrick's impact in stabilising the squad and fostering a competitive environment, with these contract extensions poised to bolster United's defensive and midfield options as they aim for sustained success in the coming seasons.
