Man Utd Ban Kai Rooney's Puma Boots in Academy, Wayne Rooney Reveals
Man Utd ban Kai Rooney from wearing Puma boots in academy

Manchester United have implemented a strict boot policy in their academy that even applies to the son of club legend Wayne Rooney. The former England captain has revealed that his 16-year-old son, Kai, is banned from wearing his sponsored Puma football boots when playing for the club's U16 side.

No Preferential Treatment for a Rooney

Speaking on 'The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast', Wayne Rooney explained the reasoning behind the rule, which he fully supports. He stated that all players in the academy's younger age groups must wear the same boots to prevent any disparity based on family wealth.

"All the academy have to wear the same boots," Rooney said. "They do it because there's people from areas where they can't afford certain boots so I think it's really good." This policy ensures a level playing field and team-first mentality from a young age.

Kai Rooney's Promising United Journey

Kai Rooney, a left-footed forward like his father, has been part of Manchester United's youth setup since he was 11 years old. He signed a commercial boot deal with Puma at the age of 12 in 2022, showcasing his early potential.

His progression has been swift. This season, at just 15 years old (before his November birthday), he began playing for the U18s. He made his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Everton at Finch Farm in August 2025. In his next match, he came off the bench to score in a 5-0 victory against Middlesbrough.

After a recent injury setback, Kai has returned to action for Darren Fletcher's U18 side, scoring on his comeback. The policy does relax for the U18s, where he is permitted to wear his Puma boots.

Following in Legendary Footsteps

The teenager faces the immense challenge of living up to his father's legacy. Wayne Rooney is United's all-time leading scorer with 253 goals from 559 appearances, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his 13 years at Old Trafford.

Kai has expressed his own lofty ambitions, telling The Talent Hunter on Instagram that in five years he hopes to be "playing on the biggest stage amongst the best players, winning trophies." He remains focused on earning a professional contract with the club.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney's other sons are also involved in football. Klay is on United's books, while Cass plays for Everton's academy. Their third son, Kit, has reportedly already 'retired' from the sport.
