Mainoo's Derby Display Justifies Amorim's Man Utd Exit

Kobbie Mainoo wants to leave Manchester United after being marginalised by head coach Ruben Amorim. The 20-year-old midfielder has not played a minute in the team's two games this season and was demoted from first choice to substitute upon returning from injury last December.

Mainoo started England's Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain last summer, less than two months after scoring for United in their FA Cup final win against Manchester City. However, his career has stalled under Amorim, who has said Mainoo is competing for a place with captain Bruno Fernandes. Amorim believes the academy graduate lacks the attributes to be a first-choice central midfielder and has not been impressed by his performances further forward in the 3-4-3 system.

United would consider a suitable offer, but there may be a lack of attractive suitors this late in the transfer window, which closes on Monday. Mainoo has set his sights on joining a Champions League club.

Mainoo is not the only United player eyeing an exit. Alejandro Garnacho has been told to find a new club, and Chelsea made further contact over the weekend regarding the winger. However, the clubs' valuations are misaligned: United want £50m, while Chelsea value him at £35m. Chelsea could go up to £40m, including add-ons, in an attempt to secure a deal.

Bruno Fernandes, who missed a penalty in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Fulham, could still be the subject of a bid from a Saudi Arabian club. Al-Hilal offered about £100m for the Portugal international in the spring, but he decided against the move. If Fernandes is sold, it may provide funds for United to revive their interest in Brighton's Carlos Baleba, whose minimum price is £100m.
