The 23-year-old winger entered the fray as a 57th-minute substitute, replacing Gabriel Martinelli, and was immediately met with a loud chorus of boos from the home support. The atmosphere had already been heated, intensified by Moises Caicedo's first-half red card for a late challenge on Mikel Merino.
Footage circulating on social media captured Chelsea's Cole Palmer, an England international colleague of Madueke, seemingly nodding in approval towards the fans who were jeering the Arsenal player as he warmed up.
