Liverpool's lack of intensity and attacking depth was laid bare in their Premier League defeat to Brighton, with Hugo Ekitike's early injury compounding an already worrying trend. The Reds were outrun by around 6km, continuing a pattern where they have been second best in that metric for 27 of 31 league games this season.
Ekitike collided with former Liverpool midfielder James Milner just eight minutes in and had to be replaced, joining Mohamed Salah on the sidelines. With Alexander Isak also injured, Liverpool were left without their main goal threats, and the attack lacked conviction throughout.
The only goal came from a Brighton error, Lewis Dunk's misjudged backpass allowing Milos Kerkez to lob home, but Liverpool quickly surrendered the lead. Manager Arne Slot has struggled to find consistency in both intensity and control, which were hallmarks of last season's title win.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker's latest hamstring injury forced Giorgi Mamardashvili into action for the fourth time this campaign. While the Georgian made several fine saves, his distribution was shaky and contributed to Brighton's opener. The international break offers respite, but Alisson's return for key cup ties against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain is uncertain.
