Liam Rosenior Emerges as Top Candidate for Chelsea After Maresca's Shock Exit
Liam Rosenior Leads Race for Chelsea Head Coach Role

Chelsea Football Club are moving swiftly to appoint a new head coach, with Liam Rosenior now the clear favourite for the role following the sudden departure of Enzo Maresca on New Year's Day.

Shock Departure Sparks Managerial Search

The search for a new boss was triggered by the shock exit of Enzo Maresca, whose relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy at Stamford Bridge broke down spectacularly. His departure, confirmed on January 1st, has forced the club into an immediate recruitment process ahead of a crucial Premier League fixture.

Rosenior Tops the Shortlist

According to sources close to the club, former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior has emerged as the leading contender. The 41-year-old is currently in charge of Strasbourg, the French Ligue 1 club that sits seventh and is also owned by Chelsea's parent company, BlueCo. Rosenior is known to have significant admirers within the Chelsea leadership.

While other candidates have been considered, it is understood that as of Thursday night, Rosenior was at the front of the queue. Any move for him would require BlueCo to find a suitable replacement at Strasbourg first.

Immediate Fallout and City Preparations

The timing of Maresca's exit presents an immediate challenge. Chelsea are due to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday in the Premier League.

The club has asked their Under-21 head coach, Calum McFarlane, along with his assistants, to prepare the first-team squad for that match. McFarlane will also step in to conduct the pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

However, Chelsea are keen to avoid naming a long-term interim boss. The situation necessitates a rapid appointment if McFarlane is not to be in temporary charge for the clash with the reigning champions. There has been no official confirmation yet on whether Maresca's backroom staff, including assistant Willy Caballero, will remain at the club.
