Snooker champion Judd Trump has firmly rejected suggestions that his relocation to the Middle East was motivated by financial considerations, stating that lifestyle and sporting facilities were the primary drivers.
The Real Reasons Behind the Relocation
The 36-year-old, originally from Bristol, has been living between Dubai and Hong Kong for over 18 months. Despite the well-documented tax advantages of residing in locations like Dubai, Trump is adamant that his decision was personal. "We can't get away with tax," Trump clarified. "Everything earned in the UK is still taxed. So that's not the reason."
Instead, he points to a desire for an outdoor lifestyle that the British climate often hinders. "For me, the reason for going is I enjoy spending time outdoors. I can't really get that here in the UK anymore," he explained, noting that even bringing his golf clubs to the UK Championship was futile due to the cold.
A Strategic Move in a Global Sport
Trump, a two-time Masters winner, also highlighted the changing geography of professional snooker as a factor. With an increasing number of tournaments being held overseas, he believes being based abroad could soon offer a logistical advantage. "Half the tournaments are abroad. I can imagine that there's going to be a day where it's going to be beneficial to be in Dubai... rather than in the UK anymore," he said, also referencing the expected return of more events in China.
The snooker star continues to return to Britain for major competitions, including the World Championship in Sheffield and the UK Championship in York. He is set to compete at the Masters this week, facing Ding Junhui in his opening match on Wednesday.
Part of a Wider Trend Among UK Athletes
Judd Trump is not alone in seeking a new life abroad. Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has also relocated to Dubai. In a recent interview, Ferdinand spoke about his reasons, touching on broader societal concerns alongside family benefits. "If there were things like the health service... working perfectly well then I think people wouldn't mind paying tax," he told LBC, adding that the move has allowed him more quality time with his family.
Other high-profile sports figures like heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury have also moved, with Fury relocating to the Isle of Man. This trend underscores a growing consideration among UK-based sports professionals about where to establish their home base, balancing career, finance, and personal wellbeing.
