Jockey fined €250 for 'serious verbal abuse' of car park attendant at Tramore
Jockey fined for verbal abuse at Tramore racecourse

An Irish jump jockey has been hit with a financial penalty following an alleged foul-mouthed tirade against a racecourse parking attendant on New Year's Day.

The Incident at a Busy Tramore

Liam Quinlan, a professional rider from Littleton in County Tipperary, was reported to the stewards after an encounter at Tramore racecourse. The incident occurred when car park attendant Peter Keane informed the jockey that the parking area was full. Keane subsequently claimed he received what was described as 'serious verbal abuse' from Quinlan.

The day had attracted a substantial crowd of approximately 7,500 people, who watched local trainer Henry De Bromhead win the featured O'Driscoll's Irish Whiskey Chase with Heart Wood. Quinlan himself had a single ride in the final race of the card, finishing ninth aboard the 9-2 chance Toor Moon in a handicap chase.

Stewards' Hearing and Jockey's Defence

During the subsequent stewards' inquiry, evidence was presented from both parties. Peter Keane stated that after informing Quinlan the car park was full, he was subjected to continual serious verbal abuse.

In his defence, Liam Quinlan explained that he had attempted to park in an area he believed was designated for jockeys. He conceded he was told the space was full but insisted to officials that he was not really abusive.

Rule Breach and Financial Penalty

The raceday stewards considered the evidence and found Quinlan in breach of Rule 272. This regulation concerns misconduct and behaviour considered prejudicial to the reputation of horse racing.

In their ruling, the stewards noted Quinlan's previously clean record in such matters. Consequently, they imposed a fine of €250 (approximately £216) on the jockey.

Quinlan, who turned professional in 2019, has ridden 56 winners in his career. His biggest victory came aboard Sequoiaspirit in the valuable Tara Handicap Hurdle at Navan in 2024, and he has ridden six winners in the current season.
