JJ Gabriel is already putting in the hard work ahead of what could be a breakthrough season for Manchester United, and his dedication should put manager Michael Carrick on alert. The highly-rated prospect, who won't turn 16 until October, will be eligible to feature in the Premier League next season.
Determined to Break Through
Gabriel looks determined to force his way into senior contention even earlier than that. Carrick will be missing several key first-team players in July due to World Cup commitments. The opening pre-season friendly, against Wrexham in Helsinki, takes place on July 18, the day before the World Cup final.
Those not involved in the tournament will be expected to report back for training ahead of that fixture, including Gabriel. The youngster has already trained alongside the first team under both Carrick and his predecessor, Ruben Amorim, with a senior debut edging ever closer.
Extra Work Pays Off
Gabriel's father, Joe O'Cearuill, has taken to social media to share a series of clips of his son putting in extra work at the gym and on the training pitch. One caption read: "JJ 12min kick ups with tennis ball walk to gym," showing the youngster's commitment to improving his skills.
Supporters were left impressed by the footage. "What a player he's going to be for United, hopefully he will have a statue one day," one commented. Another added: "I don't care about the packaging, just work ethic that makes me say this. If he has good people around him who value privacy, he'll go on to challenge for Ballon d'Or."
Other Academy Prospects
Gabriel isn't the only United academy prospect grafting away this summer. Kai Rooney had his 2025/26 campaign hampered by injury but is doing everything possible to be prepared for next term, posting a gym picture which suggested he has been building muscle ahead of pre-season.
Pre-Season Fixtures
Carrick will have ample opportunity to observe United's youngsters in action as he gears up for his first pre-season campaign as manager. The Wrexham friendly is the first of six pre-season fixtures and is followed by a match against Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway the following Friday.
They will then play two matches in Sweden, taking on Atletico Madrid in the Snapdragon Cup in Stockholm on August 1, before facing European champions PSG in Gothenburg seven days later. United meet Leeds in Dublin on August 12 and will round off their pre-season against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland three days later. Gabriel is expected to feature in the early friendlies at least, and potentially more if he makes a good impression.
