Hundreds of runners braved scorching temperatures to take part in the Rabbit Run Wales events at the Merthyr Mawr Estate in Bridgend on Saturday, July 18. Competitors faced 30°C heat as they navigated rivers, sand dunes, and valleys across a 65km ultramarathon course.
First-Time Marathon and Ultramarathon
This year marked the debut of the full marathon (42.2km), ultramarathon (65km), and marathon relay at the Rabbit Run. Previously, the longest distance was 40km. Organiser Run 4 Wales introduced the relay to allow teams of up to five runners to tackle the marathon distance together, with 20 teams participating.
Participants could also choose from a 12k, half marathon, or family-friendly events including a 2k bunny fun run, 4k double bunny run, and a 100m toddler dash.
Scenic but Demanding Course
The route took runners through the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, including Southerndown, Dunraven Bay, Monknash, and the Merthyr Mawr Warren National Nature Reserve. A notable feature was the descent down the Big Dipper, the highest sand dune in Wales. Runners also waded through a river crossing, which provided some relief from the heat.
Heat Prompts Earlier Start
Due to forecasts of high temperatures and minimal wind, organisers moved the marathon and relay start times forward by three and a half hours to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. "The decision was made to reduce the number of people running in the hottest part of the day," a spokesperson said.
Community and Camping
Runners could camp onsite at the Candleston Woods campsite, adding to the event's community feel. The Rabbit Run is organised by Run 4 Wales in partnership with the Merthyr Mawr Estate.
