A routine journey turned into a scene of devastation and heroic rescue on Monday afternoon when a charter bus carrying a high school football team and its cheerleaders veered off a major Pennsylvania highway and overturned.
The Aliquippa High School team was travelling on Interstate 376 in Beaver County when the driver lost control, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. The bus crashed through a guardrail before coming to a rest on its side in a grassy area, sparking a major emergency response.
First responders from multiple agencies descended on the scene to perform a complex rescue operation. Distressing images from the crash site showed the large white coach on its side, with its front end severely damaged and windows shattered.
"Our troopers and our local fire and EMS did a phenomenal job on scene, getting these patients out of the bus, getting them triaged, and getting them to local hospitals," stated Lt. Adam Reed of the Pennsylvania State Police.
