Harry Maguire Takes Wage Cut to Sign Manchester United Contract Extension

Harry Maguire has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United, with the option of a further season, after agreeing to a wage reduction from his previous £190,000-a-week deal. The 33-year-old centre-back described playing for the club as 'the ultimate honour' and expressed confidence in the squad's potential to fight for major trophies.

Maguire's future was in doubt under former manager Ruben Amorim, but he has become integral under interim boss Michael Carrick, who replaced Amorim. The defender has been an ever-present since Carrick took charge and earned an England recall last month, making two appearances in friendlies and putting him in contention for the World Cup squad.

Maguire joined United from Leicester for £80m in 2019, becoming the world's most expensive defender. He has made 266 appearances, winning the League Cup and FA Cup. The club valued his experience and leadership, especially with Casemiro set to depart in the summer. Maguire was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær but was stripped of the role by Erik ten Hag in 2023.

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire's mentality and professionalism, stating he brings invaluable experience to the young squad. Maguire is currently in Dublin with the team during a three-and-a-half-week gap between fixtures. Meanwhile, Amad Diallo expressed support for Carrick to be made permanent head coach, citing his experience and understanding of the club's DNA.
