The Great North Run is set to attract a record 63,000 runners when it takes place on Sunday, with more than 200,000 spectators expected to line the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle to South Shields. Organisers have confirmed the full list of road closures and traffic restrictions for the day.
Weekend of events and record entry
The world-famous half marathon marks the grand finale to a weekend of sport that begins with the Great North 5k on Friday, followed by the mini and junior runs on Saturday. All three days will involve road closures, with those around the quayside for Friday and Saturday already confirmed.
As previously reported, the usual route taking runners from the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead will be unchanged, despite ongoing demolition work on the Gateshead flyover. That stretch of the road will remain unaffected.
Sunday road closures in Newcastle
The following closures will be in place on Sunday, September 13, in Newcastle and the surrounding area:
- Park Terrace from Claremont Road to Park Terrace - 6am to 12noon
- Claremont Road from Queen Victoria Road to Barras Bridge - 6am to 12noon
- Hunters Road from Sheraton Street to Claremont Road - 6.45am to 6.30pm
- Claremont Road from Grandstand Road to Queen Victoria Road - 6.45am to 1.30pm
- Queen Victoria Road from St Thomas Street to Claremont Road - 6am to 12noon
- A167(M) - closed between A189 Cowhill and B1318 Great North Road from 8pm Saturday until 6.30pm Sunday (north and southbound) (with a targeted opening time of 6pm)
- Newcastle Central Motorway A167(M) - from the B1318 Great North Road to the Swan House roundabout north and southbound (north side of the Tyne Bridge) 8:45am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 2:45pm)
- A167 from Park Lane Roundabout to Tyne Bridge 9am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 2:45pm)
South Tyneside closures and traffic management
Further closures will be in place on the South Tyneside section of the route, including:
- Swan House roundabout (Tyne Bridge) - Felling Bypass to Whitemare Pool (A184/A194) roundabout east and westbound 9am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 5pm)
- A194 Leam Lane from Whitemare Pool (A194) to A19 Lindisfarne Roundabout Eastbound Only 9:45am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 4.30pm)
- A194 Newcastle Road from A19 Lindisfarne roundabout to A1300 John Reid Road roundabout (eastbound only) 9:45am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 3.15pm) - priority traffic exit route from South Shields
- A1300 from Newcastle Road to King George Road Eastbound only 9.45am-5pm (with a targeted opening time of 4:45pm)
- Prince Edward Road from King George Road Roundabout to Marsden Lane 9:45am to 5:35pm (with a targeted opening time of 5:45pm)
- A183 Coast Road from Redwell Bank to The New Crown Roundabout 8am to 6.30pm (with a targeted opening time of 6.30pm)
Traffic management closures will also affect access in and out of South Tyneside, including A194 Newcastle Road eastbound at Hobsons Way to A185 Jarrow Road (9.45am to 7pm), the A185 Jarrow Road right turn into A194 Newcastle Road (9.45am to 7pm), and Church Bank (Jarrow Hall) from Priory Road to Jarrow Hall (7am-1pm).
No right turns or u-turns will be permitted at the A185 Western Approach Boldon Lane/Port of Tyne roundabout, the A185 Western Approach/Templetown roundabout, and the A185 Western Approach/Crossgate roundabout (with lane filtering on each approach).
Course management crossing points
Priority road crossings and exit points will be managed on the course, with target opening times as follows:
- A184 Felling Bypass/Shields Road at Heworth interchange (crossing north-south only) - 2pm
- A194 Newcastle Road westbound at A1300 John Reid Road roundabout (South Shields egress) - 3:15pm
- A1300 John Reid Road at Boldon Lane roundabout crossing only - 3:40pm
- A1300 King George Road roundabout southbound right turn from King George Road to A1300 John Reid Road westbound only - 4pm
- A1300 Prince Edward Road at Sunderland Road roundabout north-south crossing only - 4.15pm
- A1300 Prince Edward Road at Marsden Lane/Lizard Lane north-south crossing only - 4.30pm
All targeted opening times are estimates only and subject to change. Families and friends of runners will be able to offer extra support by sharing personal messages to appear on a big screen en route, timed for the moment their loved one runs past.
