Floral tributes have been left to a 26-year-old woman who died after being hit by a taxi on Aigburth Road. The woman was struck by a white Toyota Voxy private hire taxi on the city-bound carriageway near Fulwood Road at around 5.40pm on Wednesday, September 2.
Emergency response and tributes
Strangers at the scene rushed to help the woman in the immediate aftermath of the crash, with witnesses telling the ECHO that people performed CPR before emergency services arrived. She was taken to hospital but sadly died from her injuries. Her identity has not yet been released by Merseyside Police, who have confirmed she was 26.
Three bunches of flowers had been placed by the railings close to the pedestrian crossing on Friday, September 4.
Arrest and investigation
The taxi driver, a 41-year-old man, stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving while under the influence of drugs. He remains in custody. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, with police carrying out CCTV and witness enquiries.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit previously said: “First and foremost my thoughts and those of my team remain with woman’s family at this sad time. Road death causes devastation for all those involved and it is our absolute priority to get answers for her family.”
Appeal for witnesses
“An investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstance of this collision and we are following up a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to potential witnesses and examining CCTV in the area. Aigburth Road is a very busy road and we know at that time there would have been a large volume of vehicles including buses, taxis and delivery drivers, together with pedestrians, in the area.”
“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was travelling in the area at the time with a dashcam fitted to their vehicle to make contact with our team so that we can check if it has captured anything which may provide answers surrounding this collision. Also, if you live in the area and have a CCTV system or Ring doorbell, I would be grateful if you could check your footage to see if you captured anything.”
