Runners taking part in this year's Great North Run will be able to receive personal messages of support from loved ones at the precise moment they pass a big screen on the course.
The AJ Bell 'motivation station' will be positioned in the final mile of the 13.1-mile route between Newcastle and South Shields, which takes place on September 13. Organisers say this is the point where it matters most, as runners reach the final stretch to the finish line.
How the motivation station works
Supporters can submit a personalised message or photograph, which will appear on the big screen at the very moment the targeted runner passes. Organisers hope this perfectly-timed boost could help runners when legs are tiring and they may be starting to flag.
A spokesperson said: "Whether you're there in person or supporting from afar, you can give your runner an unforgettable boost by submitting a personalised message or photo to appear on the big screen as they race by", adding: "It's the perfect way to lift their spirits and be part of a truly special moment on the course."
Other ways to support runners
The motivation station is one of several ways organisers are working to ensure every individual's Great North Run story is recognised. Plans have also been shared to livestream each runner's finish line moment.
A free tracking app allows supporters to enter a runner's name or run number and receive alerts when they start, cross key distance markers such as 5k, 10k and the half-way point, and finish. The app also provides a predicted finish time to help supporters plan for the runner's arrival.
Excitement builds for the 45th event
Organisers have confirmed that the Gateshead section of the route will be unaffected by the ongoing work on the demolition site of the flyover. The Red Arrows will also return to perform a flypast near the run start, and a week-long fringe programme has been announced to celebrate the 45th event, including extra break-out runs, a pasta party, coffee rave and after-party.
Those who submit a message or photo for a runner to see live at the motivation station will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Nando's voucher, so the entrant and runner can enjoy a meal after the event.
