A passenger stranded at London Gatwick Airport has gone viral after volunteering to help an overwhelmed easyJet ground team during mass flight cancellations that left thousands of travellers stuck.
The moment was filmed by TikTok user Joy - Hair Architect (@joy_hairarchitect) and posted on Tuesday evening (September 8). The clip has been viewed more than two million times in under 24 hours.
Passenger steps in to help
In the video, the man is shown helping out alongside the easyJet desks as long queues snake through the terminal. Despite his own journey being disrupted, he appears to manage crowds, hand out information, direct people and calm tensions while staff struggle to cope.
Text overlaid on the clip reads: “Shoutout to this hero passenger who volunteered to help understaffed easy jet team at Gatwick.” The caption adds: “He was also one of the effected passengers by the national flight cancellation.”
Identity revealed in comments
Viewers flooded the comments with praise. One person wrote: “that is a teacher who had ran a school trip before.” But the top comment, liked by the original poster, set the record straight. It read: “This guy is my husband! Very proud of him! He’s not a teacher, he was in London for a meeting. He works in cyber and was genuinely just trying to help organise folk. Bless him, he jokingly messaged me last night saying he was ‘working for the airport’ and had lost his voice…now I understand!”
Another commenter added: “That's my brother! He's not a teacher or anything to do with airlines & was also stranded at the airport. For those curious, he's the founder and CEO of his own company, Onca Technologies Ltd (Cyber Security), and also the chief exec and co-founder for the Cyber Centre of Excellence (CCoE). He does give a lot of training and does tabletop exercises with boards and managers so he's not afraid to speak up when he thinks it's needed. He's also the oldest of the 5 of us... think that's where his teacher's voice comes from.”
Mixed reactions online
Others weren’t as amused, with one saying: “The price of my ticket does not scream understaffed.” Someone else penned: “You know what’s insane - there’s an unemployment crisis in this country yet every time something major happens there’s always a company that’s understaffed.” A separate individual chimed in: “EasyJet need to hire him NOW.” One bluntly claimed: “Not a good look for the airport that their staff actually can’t do the job and a reliant on a passenger to do their work.”
Wider travel disruption
The chaos at Gatwick is part of a wider UK travel meltdown triggered by a National Air Traffic Services (NATS) technical system failure that began on Tuesday afternoon. More than 1,750 flights were cancelled nationwide on Tuesday, with a further 290-plus cancelled on Wednesday as disruption continued. Although the fault has been fixed and flights have resumed, delays of 10 minutes to more than two hours are still being reported. Officials warned it could take days for operations to return to normal. EasyJet has been hit particularly hard, with Flightradar24 logging at least 218 cancelled flights linked to the system collapse. The Daily Star has approached easyJet for comment.
