Three people were treated at the scene by paramedics after a fire broke out at a takeaway in Saddleworth, forcing the closure of the village high street for several hours.
Blaze on High Street
Fire crews were called to an eatery on High Street in Uppermill shortly after 3:30pm. Six fire engines arrived and began tackling the blaze, with police officers manning a cordon that sealed off the centre of the village.
Locals said the fire appeared to involve the building housing the Hei Hei Chinese takeaway and Hot Duck restaurant. Pictures from the scene showed smoke billowing from the roof and upper front window of the building, and firefighters used an aerial platform to douse water on it from above.
Casualties and response
Three people were assessed by paramedics at the scene and found to have suffered 'minor smoke inhalation', according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). Nearby residents were advised to avoid the area and asked to keep windows and doors shut while crews tackled the blaze.
In an update issued just after 9pm, GMFRS said the fire had been 'largely extinguished' and that crews were damping down hotspots. “One lane of High Street is set to be re-opened but residents are still asked to avoid the immediate area around the incident while emergency services continue their work at the scene,” they said.
Investigation ongoing
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and the fire service has yet to comment on the extent of the damage.
