Everton have been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfielder Jack Grealish is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a serious foot injury. Manager David Moyes confirmed the development on Friday, revealing that the on-loan Manchester City player has suffered a stress fracture and will likely require surgery.
Season Cut Short for Influential Midfielder
The injury occurred during Everton's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on 18 January, though the full extent only became clear following medical assessments. Speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture against Brighton, Moyes provided a sobering update on the 30-year-old's condition.
"We believe he's probably going to need surgery, but that's still not absolutely confirmed," Moyes stated. "It probably rules him out for the rest of the season, yes. It's really disappointing for the player, and for the club, and all of us here."
Major Setback for Player and Club
Grealish had been enjoying a successful loan spell at Goodison Park after a challenging period at Manchester City, establishing himself as a key creative force in Moyes' side. Despite modest statistics of two goals and six assists in 22 appearances, his influence extended far beyond the numbers, with the midfielder creating numerous chances and bringing valuable experience to the squad.
"He's such an important part, he's a big character, big experience for us," Moyes emphasised. "We'll miss him. He's done a lot of really good things for us."
When questioned about Grealish's long-term future following his impressive performances prior to the injury, the Everton manager was cautious, responding: "Far too early" to speculate on such matters.
Transfer Window Complications
The timing of Grealish's injury presents additional challenges for Everton, coming during the final days of the January transfer window. Moyes acknowledged that the club continues to explore potential reinforcements but expressed limited optimism about completing significant business.
"I'd like to say we're out there looking, which I think I've said in every press conference," he commented. "We're out there looking. It's not that we're shying away from it. I would say it's probably less than likely than likely..."
The manager highlighted the general difficulties clubs face during the mid-season window, noting: "(In) January you can find players, it's not to say you can't, but I think we're seeing this window becoming quite a difficult one for a lot of teams."
This injury represents a substantial setback for both Grealish's personal campaign and Everton's season ambitions, removing one of their most creative players during a crucial period. The club must now navigate the remainder of their Premier League fixtures without a player who had become integral to their attacking play.
