Gary Neville has admitted that Liverpool are on the verge of winning the Premier League title, a prospect he described as 'painful'. The former Manchester United defender believes the Reds' name is already being engraved on the trophy after they opened up a 15-point lead at the top of the table.
Liverpool's latest victory over Southampton, coupled with Arsenal being held by Manchester United, has left Arne Slot's side in a commanding position. Neville, a long-time United icon, conceded that it would take a dramatic collapse for Liverpool to let the title slip away.
Speaking about Liverpool's run-in, Neville said: 'I think it is going to be positive for Liverpool having these big games, they have not got time to stop and think. They won't be complacent in the league but they have got this. This title is in their hands.' He added that the engraver is 'starting to put the first L on the trophy, which is a painful thought.'
Neville also highlighted the significance of Liverpool potentially matching Manchester United's 20 league titles. He noted that winning a second title would elevate players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andrew Robertson to 'a serious level of player'.
Liverpool could mathematically secure the title as early as April 12 if results go their way. They would need to beat Everton and Fulham, while hoping Arsenal lose to Chelsea, Fulham, Everton, and drop points against Brentford. Slot's side require a maximum of five more wins to be confirmed as champions.
