Households across the UK are being urged to avoid using dishwashers from Monday as the country braces for a scorching heatwave. Temperatures are set to peak on Monday and Tuesday, with some areas expecting conditions as high as 34 degrees Celsius.
Why Avoid Dishwashers During a Heatwave?
Experts have warned that dishwashers generate considerable heat inside homes, which can worsen discomfort during hot weather. BBC Climate and Science reporter Esme Stellard has advised against using them during the heatwave. The experts at Tom's Guide suggest that reducing the wash temperature can help, but only if items are not heavily soiled.
Instead, households are encouraged to wash dishes by hand to minimize heat output. Ovens and cookers are also best avoided, with recommendations to stick to cold foods like salads during the hottest parts of the day.
Other Appliances to Avoid
In addition to dishwashers and ovens, other appliances that produce excess heat include vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and tumble dryers. Keeping these off can help maintain a cooler indoor environment.
Met Office Amber Warning
The Met Office has issued a serious amber weather warning for extreme heat from Monday, affecting 51 areas across the UK. The warning is in place from 1am on Monday until 11.59pm on Tuesday, primarily impacting southern England and Wales.
Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius, with overnight lows remaining above 20 degrees Celsius in urban areas. The Met Office warned of widespread impacts on people and infrastructure due to the prolonged heat.
Staying Cool Safely
To stay cool, experts recommend strategically opening and closing windows, placing bowls of ice in front of electric fans, and avoiding heat-generating appliances. Keeping the home cool is not only about comfort but also crucial for health during extreme heat events.
