Freddie Gordon's promising bid for the conditional jockeys' championship has been abruptly halted by a serious injury, dramatically reshaping the title race with just one month remaining in the season. The 20-year-old rider suffered a broken collarbone when his mount Jambon fell at Fontwell Racecourse on Friday, ending his campaign prematurely.
Championship Race Upended by Fontwell Fall
The incident occurred during a maiden hurdle event at Fontwell when Jambon, trained by Gordon's father Chris, fell at the fourth last flight. Gordon had been locked in a tight battle at the top of the conditional jockeys' championship standings alongside Tristan Durrell, with both riders having recorded 43 winners this season.
Durrell Now Clear Favorite for Title
With Gordon sidelined, Tristan Durrell emerges as the clear favorite to claim the championship title. The conditional jockeys' championship runs from May 3, 2025 through April 25, 2026, concluding on the final day of the jumps season at Sandown Park. Callum Pritchard currently sits in third position with 35 winners to his name.
"It's very annoying and the whole family is gutted," Gordon told the Racing Post. "But I've had a great season and it was going to be difficult to beat Tristan anyway because he has Dan Skelton's backing. It would have been a good fun battle between us all, so it's annoying it ended like this."
Impressive Season Statistics Cut Short
Gordon was enjoying his most successful professional campaign to date, having nearly doubled his previous season's tally of 22 winners. His horses had earned just over £570,000 in prize money this season, representing the best financial performance of his young career. The former pony racer had built an impressive 22 percent strike rate for the current campaign.
Notable Achievements This Season
Among Gordon's highlights this season was a breakthrough graded victory at Haydock in November, where he celebrated a hat-trick of wins including a memorable triumph aboard Diamond Hunter in the Betfair Supports Safer Gambling Week Newton Novices' Hurdle. This marked his first success at graded level and demonstrated his growing prowess in the saddle.
Balancing Dual Training Commitments
Gordon had been successfully juggling riding commitments for two prominent trainers throughout the season. He regularly rode horses for his father Chris Gordon while also maintaining a working relationship with six-time champion trainer Nicky Henderson at Seven Barrows. The geographical challenge of managing stables located 45 miles apart added complexity to his schedule.
"Nicky has been very good to me," Gordon previously told the Injured Jockeys' Fund. "It does help when the old man trains because he gives me plenty of rides, which is just a massive boost and that is what carried me through my career."
The injury represents a significant setback for the promising young jockey, who had positioned himself as one of the rising stars in National Hunt racing. While Durrell now appears destined to claim the conditional jockeys' championship, Gordon's absence removes what promised to be an exciting conclusion to the season-long battle between two talented young riders.
