In a breathtaking act of courage that transcends the sport he plays, a Westminster College football star has been hailed a hero after pulling an unconscious man from a ferociously burning car mere seconds before it became completely engulfed in flames.
The terrifying incident unfolded on a Missouri highway last Tuesday evening, when Anthony Hayes, a defensive back for the Blue Jays, was driving home from practice. What he witnessed next was the stuff of nightmares: a catastrophic single-vehicle crash where a car veered off the road and slammed into a tree, its engine compartment instantly erupting into a fireball.
A Split-Second Decision
Without a second thought for his own safety, Hayes screeched his car to a halt and sprinted towards the inferno. Through the thick, black smoke and intense heat, he saw the motionless driver trapped inside.
"The front of the car was already on fire and the flames were spreading fast towards the cabin," Hayes recounted. "I just reacted. I couldn't just stand there and watch. I yanked on the door handle until it gave way, unbuckled his seatbelt, and dragged him to safety."
Narrow Escape
Hayes had only just managed to pull the unconscious victim a safe distance away when the vehicle's fuel tank ignited, causing a massive explosion that completely consumed the car. Emergency services arrived minutes later to find Hayes administering first aid to the man, who is now expected to make a full recovery thanks to the player's swift actions.
His head coach, Wes Simmons, was unsurprised by his player's bravery, citing the discipline and selflessness ingrained in him through football. The local police department and fire brigade have since commended Hayes for his incredible heroism, stating his actions undoubtedly saved a life.
For Anthony Hayes, however, he shuns the 'hero' label, insisting he only did what any decent human being would do in that situation.
