Darren Fletcher's message to Man Utd players on Neville & Keane criticism
Fletcher tells Man Utd players to embrace ex-star criticism

Manchester United's interim manager Darren Fletcher has delivered a robust defence of his former teammates-turned-pundits, insisting the club's current squad must learn to handle the intense scrutiny from club legends.

Fletcher defends critical United legends

Despite escalating criticism from iconic figures like Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Paul Scholes under manager Ruben Amorim's troubled tenure, Fletcher has no intention of asking them to soften their analysis. The former midfielder, who played alongside the critical trio, believes their passionate opinions are valid and part of the fabric of Manchester United.

"You can't ask them to go easier because they're passionate guys and I think they're right to their opinion," Fletcher stated. He acknowledged the difficulty for current players, noting the pundits' medal-laden careers make their critiques hard to counter. "They've got success behind them, they've got trophies, so it's hard to criticise them back because they've got their medals on the table."

Pressure is part of the job at Old Trafford

Fletcher flipped the narrative on the perceived harm caused by external criticism, framing it as an inherent challenge of representing the club. He urged the playing staff to adapt and thrive under the spotlight.

"That's what it is being a Manchester United player," he asserted. "Get your head around it, learn how you're going to deal with it, and embrace the challenge."

He contrasted the situation with the unwavering support from the Old Trafford faithful, highlighting that fan patience has been remarkable given the club's recent poor finishes—sixth, eighth, and 15th-place in three of the last four campaigns.

WhatsApp group buzzes after Fletcher appointment

The internal dynamics among United's former players were revealed by Rio Ferdinand, who disclosed that a WhatsApp group for ex-Red Devils has been active since Fletcher's appointment as caretaker boss.

Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast, said the group—which includes figures like Edwin van der Sar—was "popping off" with congratulations. He humorously noted Fletcher's reduced activity since taking the role, suggesting the new responsibilities are keeping him busy.

Fletcher concluded by directly addressing the supporters, asking them to continue their backing for the players on the pitch. "I'm going to sit here today and ask them to support the players. Not me, support the players in the club, because they need it and they need that help."
