Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a powerful message to club manager Ruben Amorim after a stunning international performance for Portugal. Fernandes netted a hat-trick in his country's 9-1 demolition of Armenia, which secured their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Fernandes Thrives in Advanced Role
The 31-year-old midfielder was deployed in a more advanced attacking role by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, operating ahead of two defensive midfielders. This tactical freedom allowed Fernandes to flourish, scoring three goals and providing an assist in a commanding display.
This contrasts with his usual position under Amorim at Manchester United, where he typically operates in a deeper midfield two alongside either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte, requiring more defensive duties. While two of his goals came from the penalty spot, his overall performance and goal from open play highlighted his effectiveness further up the pitch.
Midfield Overhaul Planned for United
As the club prepares for its next Premier League clash against Everton, reports indicate a significant midfield shakeup is being planned. According to ESPN, United are targeting several young talents to revitalise their engine room.
The club's shortlist is said to include Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, and Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller. To facilitate these potential moves and manage the wage bill, United are prepared to offload high earners.
Players such as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are mentioned as potential departures. Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, earns a reported £325,000 per week. Veterans Casemiro and Harry Maguire could also be moved on unless they agree to significantly reduced terms.
Gallagher Addresses Transfer Speculation
Another name linked with a move to Old Trafford is Conor Gallagher. The English midfielder, who joined Atletico Madrid in 2024, has struggled for consistent game time this season.
When asked about his situation and the transfer rumours, Gallagher told AS: "I'm not satisfied. I don't think anyone would be if they don't play as much as they would like but I will continue to work very hard to, whenever I have the opportunity, help the team and hopefully more opportunities will come."
He added that he remains "very happy" at Atletico and his goal is to win titles with the club, but his comments leave the door open for a potential future move as he seeks a more prominent role.
United, under Amorim, are currently enjoying an unbeaten run in the league since late September, sitting just six points off second place as they aim to continue their strong form against Everton.
