Fan Completes 45-Year Quest Visiting Every Non-League Ground

After an incredible 45-year journey, dedicated football fan and reporter Tony Incenzo has finally completed his lifelong ambition of visiting every single non-league ground in England's national league system. The monumental feat was achieved today with a visit to Fulwood Amateurs FC in Fulwood, Preston, Lancashire, marking the culmination of a dream that has captivated the sporting world.

A Lifetime of Football Devotion

Tony Incenzo, known for his passion for lower-league football, shared his pride in reaching this milestone. He posted online to reveal the staggering statistics behind his football life: 5,804 football matches attended, 2,687 football grounds visited, and an impressive 1,359 consecutive home games attended for Queens Park Rangers since April 1973. These numbers underscore a commitment that spans decades and showcases a deep love for the beautiful game beyond the glamour of top-tier leagues.

From BBC Swap Shop to Record-Breaking Achievement

In a nostalgic reflection, Incenzo recalled how his journey began in 1981 when John Craven interviewed him for BBC1's Swap Shop as he visited all 92 League clubs. Craven signed a photo with the message: "We'll film you again when you have done all the Non-League clubs!" True to that promise, 45 years later, John Craven has interviewed him again for a BBC report ahead of this final non-league ground visit.

Incenzo fondly remembered the moment from 45 years ago: "I will never forget the moment when John Craven and the BBC camera crew parked up in our London council estate and all the local kids came running out of their houses to see what was going on!" This full-circle moment highlights how his dedication has inspired others and remained a constant in his life.

Tributes and Celebrations

Ahead of the record-breaking game between Fulwood and Thornton Cleveleys in the North West Counties League First Division North, fans across the country paid tribute to Incenzo. Dave Carolina expressed admiration, saying: "An amazing journey over soooo long. Congrats to @TonyIncenzo on completing this today. That’s some commitment." Such messages reflect the widespread recognition of his perseverance and love for football.

Incenzo shared a glimpse of his preparation for the big day, posting a picture of his breakfast at a hotel in Preston with the caption: "Here is my breakfast at the hotel in Preston ahead of me completing visits to every Non-League ground in the country's entire National League System at Fulwood Amateurs FC this afternoon." This personal touch adds to the human story behind the record.

Advocacy for Local Football

As a passionate supporter of lower-league football, Incenzo emphasized the importance of maintaining local football traditions. He stated: "The huge TV coverage of football means that kids are now growing up 'supporting' a team that they only watch on TV. But we must promote and maintain the tradition of true football supporters actively supporting their local team otherwise the smaller clubs will die in the future."

He also addressed the challenges faced by fans of smaller clubs, noting: "One of the most unpleasant aspects of armchair Premier League fans who never go to watch their teams play is that they will go into work/school on a Monday and ridicule proper supporters of smaller clubs who do actually go to watch their teams play. This is called banter." His words serve as a rallying cry for grassroots football and community engagement.

Memorable Moments and World Records

Incenzo recalled one of his favourite days from his groundhopping adventures: "One of the best groundhops was being part of a world record in March 2004. I joined 250 other groundhoppers to watch five matches at five different football grounds in one day in the Central Midlands League." This achievement is listed in the Guinness Book of Records, with certificates awarded at the end of the fifth game, showcasing the camaraderie and dedication among football enthusiasts.

This 45-year quest not only highlights Tony Incenzo's personal achievement but also shines a light on the vibrant culture of non-league football in England. His story is a testament to the enduring appeal of local sports and the power of perseverance in pursuing a lifelong dream.
