Manchester United's narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day has been overshadowed by a major refereeing controversy, with a late penalty shout dominating post-match discussion.
The Controversial Incident
During the Premier League clash at Old Trafford, a pivotal moment occurred in the Manchester United penalty area. A powerful shot from Newcastle defender Fabian Schar struck United's stand-in captain, Lisandro Martinez.
Martinez immediately appealed to referee Anthony Taylor, indicating the ball had hit his stomach. However, television replays suggested the ball had in fact made contact with the Argentine defender's arm, which was raised. Schar and his Newcastle teammates vehemently appealed for a penalty, but Taylor allowed play to continue.
The VAR Review and Expert Verdict
The incident was subsequently reviewed by Video Assistant Referee Stuart Attwell, who decided against recommending an on-field review, meaning the original decision stood.
This call has now been supported by former Premier League official Keith Hackett, who once served as general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett clarified the key rule at play.
"The referee has to judge if the action by the player is deliberate when deciding that an offence has taken place," Hackett stated. "Not every time the ball comes into contact, is it an offence. There is sufficient doubt in this action not to award a penalty kick."
Gary Neville's On-Air Analysis
Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville provided real-time analysis during the broadcast. He suggested that Martinez's tussle with Newcastle's Malick Thiaw moments before the shot may have been a crucial factor.
"Schar hits it, his arm is up above his head, and it's stretched. Is it because he's pushing Thiaw?" Neville pondered. "That might just save him. He's actually wrestling with the other Newcastle centre-back; his arms are already there."
Neville added that the VAR officials' explanation centred on "mutual contact" between Martinez and Thiaw, which provided the context for why his arm was in an unnatural position.
Amorim Praises Martinez's Character
Following the final whistle, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim was full of praise for his captain's overall performance, despite the controversy.
"I think he's a guy with a lot of character," Amorim said. "He played in the World Cup, he won the World Cup. He's used to that stress, and he showed today that he's a top player."
When asked if the team's fortunes were tied to Martinez's fitness, the Portuguese coach diplomatically declined to single out individuals, emphasising the collective effort required for success.
The decision ultimately proved decisive in a tight match, with the three points allowing Manchester United to capitalise on a key festive period fixture.
