England Squad Recall: Mainoo, Maguire and Calvert-Lewin Return for Tuchel
Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have earned dramatic recalls to the England squad, marking a significant return from the international wilderness. The trio headline Thomas Tuchel's expanded 35-man selection for upcoming Wembley friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, as preparations intensify ahead of the summer's World Cup campaign.
New Faces and Notable Absences
Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Solanke were also brought into the fold, while James Garner and Jason Steele received their first senior England call-ups. However, there was no place for Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, Manchester United's Luke Shaw, or Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, raising eyebrows among football observers.
Versatile Everton midfielder Garner has earned a maiden senior call-up after impressive club performances. Surprisingly, Brighton's 35-year-old goalkeeper Steele also received his first invitation, with Tuchel reportedly considering him as a potential training goalkeeper for the World Cup squad.
Returning Veterans and Youth
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in line for his first England appearance since 2021, having been rewarded for his fine form with promoted Leeds United this season. The striker's inclusion marks a remarkable comeback after years out of international contention.
Tuchel has selected Manchester United players for the first time since taking charge at the start of last year. Experienced centre-back Harry Maguire, 33, will have the opportunity to add to his 64 international caps, while 20-year-old Euro 2024 final starter Kobbie Mainoo returns to the fold. Both last represented England in September 2024.
Strategic Squad Management
England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed he plans to run essentially two separate squads during the international break. One group will prepare for the match against Uruguay, with approximately 10-11 additional players arriving later for the Japan fixture.
"We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost," Tuchel explained on the Football Association website. "We bring players in that we haven't seen who haven't played so much to open up the picture and the competition for plane tickets to the US. Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan."
Additional Selection Details
Despite Reece James' injury absence, there was no recall for Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham retains his place despite not playing since February 1 due to a hamstring injury. Newcastle's Lewis Hall received his first call-up under Tuchel, having previously worked with the England manager during their time together at Chelsea.
Luke Shaw, 30, was another Manchester United player pushing for inclusion but has once again been overlooked by the national team setup. The expanded squad represents Tuchel's penultimate selection before finalising his World Cup roster, with these friendlies providing crucial opportunities for players to stake their claims.
