Djokovic's Opponent Warns Alcaraz in Bold Statement

Novak Djokovic is set to face an ambitious opponent at Roland Garros, as home hopeful Valentin Royer has been denied a rematch against Carlos Alcaraz at this year's French Open. The Spaniard withdrew due to an injury that will also keep him out of Wimbledon. However, the 24-year-old Royer, who faces Djokovic on Wednesday, has already put the rest of the field on notice.

Royer's Rise at Roland Garros

Royer reached the second round at his home grand slam for the first time after dispatching Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien in straight sets. Following a strong showing in defeat to Alcaraz earlier in the year, the Frenchman appears to have limitless potential.

After a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Alcaraz in Doha, Royer boldly told the Spaniard, "I'll come for you and Jannik [Sinner]." The scoreline did not reflect the overall picture, as Royer stormed into a 5-2 lead in the second set before his opponent fought back brilliantly.

Alcaraz dropped just one set throughout the entire Doha tournament, going on to beat fellow Frenchman Arthur Fils in straight sets in the final. However, he has been out of commission in recent weeks due to injury. Royer, meanwhile, has split his time between the ATP and Challenger tours over the past 12 months and lost to Roman Safiullin in a Challenger final in Portugal earlier this year.

Mental Ambition and Grand Slam Progress

The man from the Paris suburbs demonstrated his mental ambition with that bold message to Alcaraz. Now, he is one win away from making the third round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. Royer reached the second round at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2025, though he suffered a first-round exit at the Australian Open in January, falling to Taylor Fritz.

Djokovic, seeded third at Roland Garros, faces a French opponent for the second consecutive round after coming from a set down to defeat Giovanni Mpetschi-Perricard. The Serbian also had some light-hearted words about home favourite Gael Monfils ahead of the tournament, as the veteran prepares to hang up his racket this year.

Djokovic's Tribute to Monfils

Monfils failed to beat Djokovic in all 20 of their meetings and bowed out of his final Roland Garros appearance against Hugo Gaston, having received a heartfelt send-off from the tennis world. "Honestly, he was one of my favourite players to watch, no doubt, and one of the favourite players to play against, as well! I mean, I'm sorry, but I had to mention it," the Serb said. "But incredible guy, incredible guy, so much fun to talk to him, to be around him."

"You know, it was really nice and emotional the other night. I was so happy to be part of that. Playing this game and all of the guys from men's and women's side coming to celebrate his journey, his career, was a great moment."
