Darren Fletcher's Secret Health Battle & Man Utd's Interim Manager Role
Darren Fletcher Takes Over as Man Utd Interim Manager

In a dramatic turn of events at Old Trafford, Darren Fletcher has been appointed interim manager of Manchester United. This follows the sudden dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, who was sacked after just 14 months in the job. Fletcher will take charge of the team for their mid-week Premier League fixture against Burnley.

A Remarkable Return to the Dugout

Fletcher's journey back to the helm of the first team is a story of resilience. The former midfield star, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, initially returned to the club as a coach in 2020. His promotion comes after he most recently coached the under-18s side. The club is expected to appoint a separate caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, but for now, the reins are firmly in Fletcher's hands.

The Secret Health Struggle

This interim role marks a significant personal milestone for Fletcher, whose playing career was profoundly affected by a secret health battle. In 2011, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a chronic bowel disease. However, the Scot had actually been suffering from the condition since 2008, choosing to keep it private from the club and public.

"I stayed silent until about 2011 or 2012 because it's not something you generally talk about," Fletcher revealed in 2014. "My close family and friends knew, but nobody else knew at the club. I found it difficult, making up stories for reasons why I wasn't at training." He described the immense relief he felt when he finally went public with his condition.

The illness caused him to lose nearly three stone in weight and led to surgery in January 2013. His comeback was nothing short of miraculous, returning to action in a 3-0 win against Aston Villa in December 2013. He was later named vice-captain by Louis van Gaal in 2014.

Career Cut Short by Pandemic Fears

After leaving United in 2015 for spells at West Brom and Stoke City, Fletcher began studying for his coaching badges in 2019. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic forced a heartbreaking final decision regarding his playing career. Fearing his condition left him at higher risk from the virus, he acknowledged he would likely not play again, bringing his time on the pitch to a definitive end.

This tough call paved the way for his coaching return to Manchester United, where he first worked with the under-16s before progressing to the under-18s. Now, at the age of 41, he finds himself temporarily in charge of the senior squad he once captained, completing an extraordinary full-circle moment at the club he joined as an 11-year-old boy.
