Former Chelsea and Romania defender Dan Petrescu does not have cancer, contrary to earlier reports that suggested he was seriously ill. The 58-year-old, who stepped down as manager of CFR Cluj four months ago, is reportedly well, according to a BBC Sport journalist.
Earlier claims in Romanian media indicated that Petrescu had lost five stone in weight and appeared frail, with his daughters flying to Romania to be by his side. The president of the Romanian Football League, Gino Iorgulescu, had stated that Petrescu was undergoing chemotherapy, sparking widespread concern.
However, BBC Sport's Nizaar Kinsella clarified on social media: 'Just a note to say all is okay with former Chelsea legend Dan Petrescu and he doesn't have cancer (following reports).' The update puts an end to speculation that had been circulating for weeks.
Petrescu spent four-and-a-half years at Chelsea, making 208 appearances and scoring 23 goals. He won two FA Cups, a League Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge. After retiring, he managed several clubs, including four spells at CFR Cluj, where he won four league titles and a Romanian Cup.
